DIY Sensory Craft Sticks

Sensory play is defined as any form of play that stimulates our senses (Action for Children, 2022; Only About Children, 2024). Engaging in sensory play and exploration is important for children’s development and learning as it helps them interact with and learn about the environment around them, along with developing their eight sensory systems (Only About Children, 2024). Additionally, sensory play is fun!

Children with sensory processing differences may find traveling challenging. Sensory craft sticks are an on-the-go tool for sensory input to promote regulation (Greutman, 2019; The Baby Bump Diaries, 2023). The sensory craft sticks are a budget-friendly tool as you can use what you already have or obtain inexpensive materials (Montessori from the Heart, 2024). The craft sticks can be tailored to meet your child’s sensory preferences. Check out some examples below, along with other ideas for materials that could be used to enhance sensory experiences!

Note: Please supervise young children while using the sensory craft sticks to avoid children putting them in their mouths and/or choking.
